History
of Maui: The old whaling town of Lahaina, with its art
galleries, stores, and restaurants, has become a popular Maui hotspot, but
history abounds here certainly.
The town was not only the
capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early 19th century but also a booming
whaling town. The character of "Old Lahaina," reflecting Herman
Melville's whaling era in his classic novel Moby Dick, remains true to his
patrimony.
Several historical
landmarks, including the oldest living banyan plant in 1873, covering a whole
acre, remain in the town today. In 1840, King Kamehameha III commissioned the
Old Lahaina Lighthouse.
Beaches: There’s
no doubt Maui is known for its beaches. The coastline is 30 miles more than any
other Hawaiian island, with white, green, red, and blacks beaches plus more
